I am not a teacher, can I still homeschool my child?
Yes, in Alabama you do not have to be a certified teacher to homeschool your own child, niece, nephew, or grandchildren.
Is Alabama Homeschool Academy accredited?
No, we are not accredited however, we have students attend college each year.
Why should I join Alabama Homeschool Academy?
Prior to 2014, Alabama law required that any student being taught at home had to be a member of church school covering.There is not a legal requirement to join our cover school, but we do pride ourselves on offering record management, social events, as well as one on one support to help guide you through the home schooling process.
What about prom and graduation?
We have prom and graduation every year just like public and private schools.
Is a pastor's letter of recommendation required?
Yes, however if you do not have a church home you may submit your letter of testimony in place of the pastor's letter of recommendation for one year.
Do I have to buy my child's curriculum from Alabama Homeschool Academy?
No, but we do have discounted and used curriculum for sale. We also offer a lease option for Switched on Schoolhouse software.
How much does it cost?
There is a one time $75 per student application fee. Tuition is $300 per year per family. HSLDA membership is $120 per year per family. Curriculum, field trips & co-op classes are offered on a per student basis for an additional fee.
Why do I have to be a member of The Homeschool Legal Defense Association (HSLDA)?
HSLDA is a wonderful resource for homeschool families, should they have any issues with a truancy officer, public school board, or department of human resources (DHR).
